Kal Malik is the author of ten concise books on complementary therapies. (See titles and covers below.) He is a lecturer on complementary therapies at Chester University Associate College and a speaker on well-being, motivation and leading a more enlightened life. As a holistic therapist and life coach, Kal enjoys designing and facilitating courses and workshops on well-being, personal development and parapsychology. He is currently working on two books: Active Enlightenment and Radical Enlightenment.
Kal’s upbringing included training in the Islamic faith. His family were devout followers and taught Kal extensively. During his teens, Kal became fascinated with the paranormal and all the topics that come under that umbrella. And with his extensive interest in the sciences, he was able to explore this subject with an open and analytical mind. After completing his college years, Kal went on to earn a degree in Information Technology. During his time at university, Kal travelled Europe and beyond. After completing his degree, he continued with his travels including following the Silk Road to China. It was during this time that his desire to learn about the ‘why’ of people took an academic turn and he began his degree in Psychology with the Open University.
His passion for learning, analysing and seeking out personal truths was evident during his mid twenties. Kal's interest spanned science, consciousness, behaviour, parapsychology and mysticism. Never one for shying away, he was often in contact with writers and thinkers within these fields. He also attended talks, lectures, discussions and all manner of experiential courses, workshops and expeditions. It was during this time that he outgrew his religious upbringing. However, he never lost track of the mystical-Sufi teachings. Religions, orthodox or not were not for him. As he describes it, “it is an emergent property, that when one has experienced and learned enough, an inevitable conclusion must be drawn, which is deeply personal for each of us.”
Upon his return from his travels, Kal learned that his IT degree had become outdated, so he embarked on his Masters in Computing, again, the spark of the curious and unusual was evident in his choice of specialisation: Artificial Intelligence, Genetic Algorithms and Neural Networks. Completing this in short order, Kal began his career in earnest. Having continued a career in IT for several years, excelling in his field, he came to an abrupt conclusion in February 2000. His mother, who was extremely ill, desired to go on a holy pilgrimage (Hajj) to Mecca and synchronistic forces came into play that made it possible for him to accompany her on her journey. It was “a truly profound experience that created within me the seed of (life) change.” This experience led to a divergent path for Kal.
Kal left his work and took another year to explore his heritage, travelling the Indian sub-continent. Within weeks of his return, he developed a course on parapsychology, bringing together his years of experience and learning as well as his decades of membership to associations such as the society of Psychical Research (SPR). The popularity of this course (which runs three or four times a year) astonished Kal. Like everything else in his life, Kal learned all he could on the subject, and with his skill of connecting ideas, created a course on well-being, which was later renamed the “Phoenix Programme: Personal Development at its Best!” This course proved popular, even moreso than the parapsychology course. Taking his inspiration from genetics and algorithms, he put it into a continuous evolutionary cycle that resulted in a course that has inspired various commendable references to his work.
Over the past six years, Kal built on the success of both of these courses by learning about many holistic therapies. His passion for holistic well-being was such that he breathed life into his old skills of website development and created an online version of the Phoenix Programme, which at one point had over 5000 members worldwide. Bringing the experiences of these members together with his own knowledge, Kal wrote ten concise books on complementary therapies and created his own publishing company to promote and sell them.
Kal is a trained healer and is skilled in crystal, Reiki and chakra healing and is knowledgeable in many other forms of therapy. As a workshop attendee described him, “Kal doesn’t talk about well-being, he creates it.” As he is the first to admit, “whatever works”, Kal learns from the best, distills the lessons to their essence and adds his own magic, making his workshops, talks and courses delightful, life changing, fun and motivational. Kal’s breadth of knowledge and experience coupled with an uncanny knack of tying ideas together make him a popular speaker at community centres, libraries, bookshops and other venues. Synopsis for Active Enlightenment: "'We are Divinity exemplified,' says Kal in this thought provoking and refreshing look at personal & spiritual development. Consider for a moment that if this is the case, how can we return to the original purity that we all know in our heart to be the truth? Gently stripping away the many clouds that have settled over this liberating truth. Active Enlightenment encourages the reader to be a force in the co-creation of their world. Taking experiences from the realms of parapsychology, personal development, spirituality and science, Kal weaves a tale that is both informative and deeply practical. In his hands, enlightenment becomes a path that is yours to define. Indeed, personal empowerment is one of the primary keys of Active Enlightenment. "The truth isn't out there, it is inside of you" Let us go in search of it! Kal's call is simple, "Become transformational engineers." Don't wait for the world to demand that you change. Instead, take the reigns of your life and be the creator of change. Active enlightenment asks the reader to invoke the phoenix within them and burn away the fears and burdens that are not in resonance with their hearts. Replace these phantom truths with powerful personal truths from a the path of freedom."
